Nakhumicha Heckled in Cherangany as 2027 Political Tensions Begin to Surface

Former Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha was heckled by residents during a public event in Cherangany Constituency, Trans Nzoia County, in an incident that has sparked debate across the region.

Witnesses said the meeting turned chaotic after sections of the crowd began chanting “Toka hapo” as she attempted to address them.

Within minutes, the noise intensified, making it difficult for her message to be heard and forcing the gathering into disorder.

Those present described the atmosphere as openly hostile, reflecting resistance from part of the audience.

Some locals linked the reaction to growing speculation that Nakhumicha could be eyeing the Trans Nzoia gubernatorial seat in 2027.

Although she has not made an official declaration, political talk in the county has been gaining momentum.

The current governor, George Natembeya, continues to enjoy strong backing in several parts of the county, including Cherangany.

Elected in 2022, Natembeya has remained visible in local development initiatives, with supporters viewing him as firmly in control of the county’s political landscape.

Political observers argue that the heckling may signal early tensions ahead of the 2027 elections. Trans Nzoia politics has grown increasingly competitive, with leaders seeking to consolidate their influence and grassroots support.

Nakhumicha previously served as Health CS under William Ruto before recent Cabinet changes. She also represented Tongaren as Member of Parliament, cementing her roots in western Kenya politics, though her standing in Trans Nzoia remains a subject of debate.

Online reactions have been divided. Some social media users interpreted the incident as a sign of voter frustration, while others suggested it may have been politically orchestrated to embarrass her. However, no evidence has emerged to substantiate either claim.

Despite the disruption, Nakhumicha has continued engaging supporters in other areas.

Her allies maintain that she has every right to pursue any political seat, while critics insist she must strengthen her grassroots networks if she intends to mount a serious bid.

The Cherangany episode adds another layer of intrigue to an already charged political environment, underlining how public rallies have become arenas where leaders face immediate and unfiltered reactions from citizens.
