ODM Leaders ‘Enjoying Benefits’ from Kenya Kwanza Cooperation — Senator Richard Onyonka

Senator Richard Onyonka has ignited debate over the Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) political direction, claiming that some party leaders who joined the broad-based government are reaping personal and political benefits.

Speaking during a public engagement, Onyonka suggested that leaders who agreed to work with the Kenya Kwanza administration are “wanakula vizuri,” a Swahili phrase meaning they are living comfortably or benefiting from the arrangement.

His remarks questioned whether the partnership serves the party’s interests or individual gain.

The statement comes amid ongoing discussions within ODM about its relationship with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

While some party members see collaboration with the government as a way to channel development and resources to their regions, others fear it could erode ODM’s identity as a strong opposition party.

The late former ODM leader Raila Odinga had previously indicated that cooperation between ODM and UDA could continue until the 2027 General Election.

Raila described the partnership as part of a broader strategy to stabilise the country, reduce political tension, and create room for dialogue.

Onyonka’s comments, however, underscore growing concerns among ODM supporters who feel the party must protect its independence and core values.

Critics warn that prolonged alignment with the government could confuse voters and weaken ODM’s performance in future elections.
