Kenya’s Opposition Prepares New Coalition Ahead of 2027, Moving Away from Azimio Brand

Kenya’s opposition is preparing to form a new coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, signaling a departure from the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya brand. Leaders say the move is intended to present a stronger front against President William Ruto.

Coalition spokesman Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi confirmed that no discussions have taken place to revive Azimio in its current form.

He said a meeting is scheduled for Naivasha over the weekend to discuss the coalition’s future, with a full statement expected on Monday afternoon.

The shift follows the appointment of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as head of the coalition after the death of former Azimio leader Raila Odinga.

While initially seen as a move to strengthen Azimio, some leaders argue that the coalition carries political baggage from previous elections and favors the creation of a new legal structure and brand.

Deputy Coalition Party (DCP) leader Cleophas Malala stressed that Azimio remains a legally recognized coalition, and any formal breakup must comply with the law.

He emphasized that the coalition’s primary objective is clear: to ensure President Ruto serves only one term. Leaders indicated they are open to alliances with any party that supports this goal.

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has taken a firm stance against changes to Azimio without its approval.

ODM leader Dr. Oburu Oginga stated that the party remains the largest and most influential within the coalition, and no decisions can be made without its consent. ODM plans to formally withdraw from Azimio soon.

Political analyst Chris Omore noted that the debate is not only about the coalition’s name but also about control and influence.

Retaining the Azimio brand could favor those who originally shaped it, giving them greater authority over strategy.

The upcoming Naivasha meeting will also address power-sharing arrangements, including the presidency, deputy presidency, and a possible prime ministerial role if constitutional amendments are enacted after 2027.

Opposition leaders plan to unveil their joint candidate and detailed power-sharing plan by December 2026, keeping details under wraps to avoid disrupting strategic negotiations.
