Kenya Moves to Digital KCSE Certificates as KNEC Embraces Technology

Kenya is set to enter a new era of education credentials as the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) announces the introduction of electronic KCSE certificates.

The move, targeting candidates who sat national exams from 2023, aims to modernize the issuance and verification of exam results while aligning the country’s education system with global digital standards.

Education Julius Ogamba revealed the initiative during a briefing at KNEC’s South C offices, emphasizing that technology is now central to efficient public service delivery.

Under the new system, students will receive secure electronic certificates in addition to traditional paper copies.

These digital documents are expected to reduce forgery, enhance record safety, and allow institutions to verify academic credentials quickly and reliably.

Ogamba noted that the shift will also cut operational costs associated with printing and storage, while promoting environmental sustainability by reducing paper use.

The council plans to pilot the system by the end of February, allowing for testing before a nationwide rollout. Further details on certificate access will be provided during the official launch.

Despite the digital upgrade, KNEC confirmed that physical certificates will remain valid and must still be retained for official purposes. The digital certificates are intended to complement, rather than replace, printed documents.

Additionally, KNEC is enhancing its online verification platform. Employers, universities, and other institutions will soon be able to authenticate certificates through the improved system, increasing confidence in Kenyan academic documents both locally and internationally.

If the pilot phase is successful, KNEC intends to extend electronic certification to candidates who sat exams prior to 2023, marking a significant step toward a fully digital examination framework in Kenya.

This initiative underscores the council’s commitment to leveraging technology for secure, efficient, and globally competitive education services.
