U.S. Says It Struck Panama-Flagged Cargo Ship Near Strait of Hormuz

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) says American forces struck the Panama-flagged cargo vessel Vela Nova on August 11 after the ship allegedly attempted to cross a U.S. maritime blockade aimed at Iran near the Strait of Hormuz.

The incident comes at a time when diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran have made little progress. Tensions between the two countries remain high despite a ceasefire currently in place.

The reported attack has also raised fresh concerns about the safety of commercial vessels using the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important routes for transporting oil and other energy supplies.
