Police in Nyeri County are investigating the tragic death of a one-year-old baby who was found dead days after being reported missing.
According to reports, the child, identified as Mary Wanjiru Mohinja, went missing under unclear circumstances on April 8, 2026, at around 1 p.m. in Gondo. She was last seen wearing blue trousers and had small braids.
Her family filed a missing person report at Nyeri Police Station and appealed to residents with any information that could help trace her whereabouts to come forward.
Authorities also urged members of the public to assist in the search efforts as investigations into her disappearance began.
The search came to a heartbreaking end on April 10, 2026, when the child’s body was discovered in a nearby river.
Her death was confirmed by Evangelist Nungari, who alleged that the minor may have been murdered by a relative who reportedly threw her into the river.
The body was recovered and taken to the mortuary pending a postmortem examination and further investigations to determine the exact cause of death.
Police have since arrested a suspect, who is currently in custody as investigations continue.
The incident has sparked outrage among members of the community, who are calling for justice and demanding swift action against those responsible.
