The incident occurred along the busy Embu–Mwea Highway, where the victim was reportedly jogging in the morning before being struck by a speeding vehicle.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver lost control of the car, veered off the road, and hit the victim before fleeing the scene, leaving him with fatal injuries.
The accident happened shortly after a separate lorry crash caused a traffic jam in the area, with witnesses saying the vehicle was moving at high speed from the opposite direction when the driver suddenly lost control.
The deceased has been identified as Mark Winana, a popular local politician who was eyeing the MCA seat in one of the wards in Embu County.
His sudden death has left residents in shock, with many describing him as a promising leader who had been actively engaging with the community.
Locals have raised concerns over the rising number of accidents along the Embu–Mwea Highway, terming the area a danger zone due to frequent crashes.
They noted that repeated calls for the installation of speed bumps and other safety measures have not been addressed.
Some residents also blamed reckless driving, particularly by miraa transporters, saying they often ignore road safety rules even in areas with pedestrians.
Police have launched a manhunt for the driver who escaped from the scene, while the vehicle involved has been taken to a nearby police station.
The incident has renewed urgent calls for authorities to improve road safety measures and prevent further tragedies.
