NPS Dismisses Reports on DCI Boss Amin’s Retirement as Misleading

The National Police Service has dismissed reports claiming that Mohamed Amin, the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), has retired.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga termed the reports—published by Daily Nation—as misleading, premature, and speculative.

Nyaga maintained that Amin remains lawfully in office and continues to discharge his duties, dismissing claims that his tenure had ended after reaching the retirement age of 60.

“The claim that Amin's tenure ‘ends today’ is factually inaccurate, premature, speculative and misleading. He continues to serve in office lawfully,” Nyaga stated.

He emphasized that decisions regarding the appointment and tenure of senior security officials are governed by established legal procedures, and not media reports.

The police service also criticised the publication for linking Amin’s leadership to alleged abductions, describing such claims as reckless and unsubstantiated.

Nyaga argued that the Directorate has handled all reported cases professionally, noting that some alleged abductions have turned out to be staged incidents.

He further defended the record of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, highlighting achievements under Amin’s leadership, including improved forensic capacity, dismantling of criminal networks, and enhanced international cooperation—such as his recent election to a key Interpol position.

Nyaga urged media houses to prioritise accuracy and responsible journalism, especially on sensitive national security matters, warning that publishing unverified information risks damaging credibility.

The clarification comes amid growing tension between security agencies and sections of the media over reporting on high-level public officials and sensitive investigations.
