A Kiambu woman identified as Njeri is currently serving a 60-year jail sentence at Lang’ata Women Prison after she was allegedly framed by her boyfriend in a drug trafficking case.
Her story has touched many people who say she may have been innocent and used without her knowledge.
According to Njeri, she found herself in a relationship with a Nigerian man who was living in Kenya.
She said she did not understand the kind of work the man was doing and never suspected anything illegal.
Njeri explained that her boyfriend used to give her bags and instruct her to deliver them to different destinations while he stayed at home with their children. She trusted him and believed everything was normal.
However, things changed on 8 September 2023 when she was stopped at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). She had been given another bag by her boyfriend and told to deliver it to a person waiting at the airport.
She said she had no idea what was inside the bag. Later, it was discovered that the bag contained cocaine and heroin that were allegedly meant to be transported to another country.
She was arrested and later charged in court, where she was sentenced to 60 years in prison.
Njeri added that when her boyfriend learned about her arrest, he fled back to his home country, leaving her and their children behind without any care. She now worries deeply about her children who are suffering outside.
On social media, many Kenyans have reacted with sympathy, saying the case is heartbreaking and hoping that justice or mercy may one day come for her.
