MPs Assess Chebiuk Land Dispute Ahead of Title Deeds Decision

Members of the National Assembly’s Committee on Environment and Lands have visited Kipsigon area in Mt. Elgon Constituency to gather facts on a long-standing land dispute before deciding whether to issue title deeds to residents.

The delegation was led by Kacheliba MP Titus Lotee, who serves as the committee’s Vice Chairperson.

He said the visit was meant to understand the situation on the ground, especially regarding the contested Chebiuk Phase Two settlement scheme.

The area has remained a source of tension for years, with many residents living without legal ownership documents. As a result, families have faced uncertainty and the constant fear of eviction.

Residents who spoke during the visit expressed support for the issuance of title deeds, saying it would give them security and peace of mind after years of waiting.

However, some locals also accused certain leaders of taking advantage of the dispute to create divisions within the community for political gain.

The committee is expected to use the findings from the visit to guide its final decision on whether the land should be regularized and title deeds issued to the occupants.
