A family in Kayole estate, Nairobi, is demanding answers after a pregnant woman reportedly died following a dental procedure at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital. The incident has left relatives and the local community shocked as they seek clarity on the circumstances that led to her death.
Twenty-eight-year-old Viona Munai, who was nine months pregnant and expecting her first child, was taken to the hospital on Sunday, February 24, by her husband, Eludo Kenya, after she complained of severe tooth pain. She was admitted that same night for treatment.
Before she died, her last painful words reportedly shocked everyone in the hospital, leaving staff and family members in tears.
Viona is said to have cried out: "Please God help me get rid of this pain." These words captured the agony she endured in her final hours, raising questions about the care she received.
Her husband recalled expecting routine care, but he was shocked the next morning to learn that doctors had removed one of her teeth without his consent.
He later discovered that she had been taken to the theatre, and he waited anxiously for hours as other patients were treated.
Hospital management offered a different account, stating that Viona was admitted as an emergency patient with a life-threatening dental infection, worsened by her pregnancy.
They explained that the theatre procedure was necessary to assist her breathing through intubation and was not related to delivering the baby. The hospital maintained that all medical protocols were reportedly followed.
The family remains unconvinced and has called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Viona’s death.
Cases of alleged medical negligence continue to spark concern in Kenya, highlighting ongoing questions about patient safety and hospital accountability.
