Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and his Linda Mwananchi movement have expressed surprise and concern after learning that an individual reportedly tried to register a political party using the movement’s name.
The revelation has stirred discussions within political circles and raised questions about the protection of established political identities.
The Linda Mwananchi movement, championed by Sifuna, has been actively engaging communities nationwide, promoting governance, transparency, and accountability.
Its growing influence and visibility have made it a recognizable voice in opposition politics, often challenging government policies and advocating for citizen-centered governance.
Officials from the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties reportedly disclosed that a registration process had been initiated for a party bearing the same name.
Sifuna’s team has stated they are not associated with the attempt and emphasized they are unaware of who is behind it. They stressed that the movement remains independent and intact.
This incident comes amid rising tensions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), where the party’s Parliamentary Group recently backed a motion to remove Sifuna as Secretary-General, citing disagreements over the party’s stance toward the “broad-based” government.
Sifuna has openly challenged the decision, signaling the potential for legal proceedings and further debates over party leadership and alignment.
Observers note that the registration attempt, whether intentional or not, underscores the need for vigilance in safeguarding political movements and their identities as Kenya’s political landscape continues to evolve.
