Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has made fresh allegations against President William Ruto, claiming that Chinese contractors linked to the multibillion-shilling Railway City project in Nairobi were deported under controversial circumstances.
Speaking on Sunday, March 15, 2026, during an interdenominational church service at Kirathani Grounds in Ithanga, Gatanga Constituency in Murang’a County, Gachagua alleged that the move was intended to pave the way for another contractor to take over the project at a higher cost.
According to Gachagua, the Nairobi Railway City project is reportedly financed through a grant from the United Kingdom. He claimed that the contract had initially been awarded to China Railway Engineering Corporation after the firm submitted a bid of about KSh22 billion.
However, the former deputy president alleged that the company was prevented from executing the project despite submitting the lowest quotation.
He claimed another company that quoted approximately KSh29 billion was instead favored, creating a difference of about KSh7 billion.
Gachagua further alleged that directors connected to the Chinese firm were deported from Kenya to stop them from pursuing a legal appeal at the procurement tribunal over the tender dispute.
He said he plans to escalate the matter to both the British and Chinese governments, urging them to intervene.
According to him, the alleged decision raises concerns about transparency in public procurement and could potentially cost taxpayers and development partners billions of shillings.
At the time of reporting, neither the Kenyan government nor Kenya Railways had publicly responded to the allegations.
