Former Deputy President and DCP Party leader Rigathi Gachagua has sparked discussion after urging some civil servants who communicate with him to stop using WhatsApp and switch to Signal for their conversations.
Speaking during a public gathering, Gachagua said certain government officers have been discreetly sharing information with him about internal affairs, believing the public deserves to know what is happening behind the scenes.
However, he expressed concern that some powerful individuals may be monitoring calls and messages to track who is communicating with him.
“To protect their safety, I am asking that serious communications be done via Signal rather than WhatsApp,” Gachagua stated. He explained that Signal offers stronger privacy protections, making it harder for third parties to intercept messages or calls.
Gachagua emphasized that the civil servants sharing information are not engaging in illegal activity; rather, they are acting in the public interest by highlighting issues that need attention.
“Kenya belongs to all citizens, and even government workers have the right to speak up when they see problems,” he added.
His remarks quickly spread across social media, prompting debates among Kenyans. Some view his concerns as valid, highlighting issues of privacy and surveillance within government, while others interpret his statements as politically motivated, aimed at stirring tension in the current political climate.
