Kirinyaga County, Kenya – Political tension is escalating in Kirinyaga County after Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina accused Cleophas Malala of allegedly supporting a group of Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) aligned with Governor Anne Waiguru.
According to Maina, the alleged support is intended to counter grassroots supporters of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in the county.
Malala serves as the deputy party leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party, a political party linked to Gachagua, which has been building its structures across the Mt Kenya region.
Maina claimed that the Waiguru-aligned MCAs recently convened a political meeting in Kenol, allegedly forming a bloc aimed at challenging pro-Gachagua leaders and local politicians.
She further raised concerns about financial incentives provided to some MCAs to attend the meeting, warning that such actions could deepen divisions in the county’s political leadership.
Kirinyaga has become a key political battleground, with leaders from rival camps working to consolidate their influence ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
Observers say the unfolding situation could shape the county’s political alliances and influence broader dynamics in the Mt Kenya region.
