Kapsabet, Kenya – Eleven students of Kapsabet School for the Deaf were hospitalized on Thursday morning after falling into a septic tank on the school compound while rushing to catch a glimpse of President William Ruto.
The incident occurred when the students stood on an old septic tank measuring about 20 feet long, which could not support their combined weight and collapsed, submerging all 11 learners.
Kapsabet County CEC Angeline Kirui confirmed the incident and was among the first responders at the scene.
Rescue teams and county disaster officers quickly arrived and rushed the injured students to Kapsabet County Referral Hospital for treatment.
President Ruto, upon receiving reports of the accident, visited the school to express regret over the incident.
He also pledged Ksh 5 million for the development of infrastructure at the affected school before proceeding to his scheduled engagement at Kapsabet Girls.
The school administration and local authorities have since reviewed safety measures on the compound to prevent similar accidents in the future.
