“Niko Kadi” Campaign Gains Momentum Nationwide but Faces Challenges in Kakamega

The “Niko Kadi” campaign, a youth-led initiative aimed at increasing voter registration across Kenya, continues to gain traction in several parts of the country.

Driven largely by young activists and civic groups, the movement has played a key role in motivating first-time voters and raising awareness about the importance of civic participation.

In major towns and regions such as central and coastal Kenya, the campaign has attracted significant attention. Organisers have embraced social media platforms, community outreach programmes, and grassroots mobilisation to engage the youth.

The message encourages young people to acquire national identification documents and voter cards, emphasizing that participation in elections is both a right and a responsibility.

Despite this growing momentum, Kakamega County appears to be trailing behind. Reports from the region indicate lower levels of awareness and limited campaign visibility compared to other parts of the country.

Some residents have raised concerns that the initiative has not been effectively adapted to suit the local context.

Community leaders in Kakamega have cited several obstacles, including limited access to registration centres, logistical challenges, and inadequate civic education.

Others believe that stronger coordination between campaign organisers and local authorities could improve outreach and engagement.

Youth leaders in the area are now calling for more targeted grassroots efforts, including door-to-door sensitisation and collaboration with local influencers.

They argue that with improved strategies and support, the county can still catch up with the rest of the country.

As the “Niko Kadi” campaign continues to expand nationwide, its impact in Kakamega will largely depend on how quickly stakeholders address these challenges and bring the message closer to the people.
