Nyandarua Senator John Methu Slams Lee Kinyanjui Over “Political Double Standards

Nyandarua Senator John Methu has sparked fresh political debate after criticizing Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui for what he describes as blatant political double standards regarding President William Ruto.

Methu reminded Kinyanjui of his sharp criticism of Ruto during the 2022 campaigns, contrasting it with his current support for the President’s administration.

According to the Senator, Kinyanjui, while serving as Nakuru Governor in 2022, publicly warned Kenyans against electing Ruto, portraying him as unfit for leadership.

Fast forward to 2026, and the same leader is now encouraging citizens to rally behind Ruto’s government ahead of the 2027 General Election.
For Methu, the shift raises serious questions about political sincerity and accountability.

“Wewe Lee Kinyanjui, when you were Nakuru Governor you preached how Ruto is a bad conman in 2022,” Methu said.

“But when we have been opened eyes in 2026, you fall for his tricks as President. When we want Ruto to go, you tell us to support his government ahead of 2027 elections.”

Methu acknowledged his own political evolution, admitting that he once supported Ruto but has since become one of his vocal critics.

However, he distinguished this from opportunistic politics, arguing that changing one’s stance based on governance outcomes differs from abandoning principles for proximity to power.

The Senator insisted that leaders should be honest about why they change positions, rather than pretending past statements were never made. He warned that voters are increasingly alert to political inconsistency.

His remarks come amid growing political realignments as the 2027 elections approach, with several former critics of the Kenya Kwanza administration now warming up to the government.

Methu’s comments have reignited conversations around political consistency, loyalty, and credibility, positioning him as a vocal critic calling for integrity in leadership.

Whether his challenge resonates with voters remains to be seen, but it has undeniably intensified debates on trust and truth in Kenyan politics.
