Kenya Prisons Officers to Receive Salary Hike from July 2026

President William Ruto announced that officers in the Kenya Prisons Service will receive a salary increase effective July 1, 2026.

Speaking during a Passing Out Parade at the Prisons Staff Training College in Ruiru on Thursday, the Head of State stated that the pay adjustment follows recommendations from the Maraga Taskforce on public service salaries.

Phased Salary Review

Ruto highlighted that the first and second phases of the salary review have already been implemented:

Entry-level prison constables’ pay has increased by 36%.

The overall salary scale across ranks has risen by 24%.

Phase Three, set to begin in July, will further adjust salaries as part of the ongoing remuneration restructuring within the correctional service.

Commitment to Welfare and Motivation

The President said the increment underscores the government’s dedication to improving the welfare, motivation, and working conditions of prison officers, recognizing their crucial role in maintaining national security and ensuring the safe custody of offenders.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen also attended the event, joining Ruto in commending the officers for their professionalism and service.

The announcement is seen as a significant step toward enhancing the morale and efficiency of the Kenya Prisons Service while addressing long-standing concerns over compensation and working conditions.
