A family in Eldoret is grappling with the loss of their son, Eric Obadiah, a former Kenya Prisons Service officer, who died in Russia just months after leaving Kenya in pursuit of better opportunities abroad.
Eric had served diligently in the Kenya Prisons Service but felt his salary was insufficient to meet personal and family needs. Like many young professionals, he sought to improve his life and support his loved ones.
According to the family, Eric was approached by a friend offering a seemingly well-paying job in Russia. After several discussions, he secured the position and informed his relatives, who reluctantly gave him their blessings despite concerns about traveling far from home.
Initially, Eric reassured his family that he had settled in and that the overseas employment would improve their circumstances.
However, a few months into his stay, he ceased communication. His phone was reportedly switched off, and messages and calls went unanswered for over a month.
The tragic incident has left the family in shock and highlights the risks that some Kenyans face when seeking work abroad, raising questions about safety, verification of overseas employment offers, and support systems for migrant workers.
