‘What Is Ksh 800?’ Ruto’s Health CS Criticizes Kenyans Paying Less Than Ksh 1,000 to SHA

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has allegedly criticized some Kenyans who are paying only Ksh 800 per month to the Social Health Authority (SHA).

Speaking during a public address, the CS questioned why citizens contribute such a small amount and still expect the government to fully pay for their medical bills when they fall sick.

According to Duale, healthcare services are very expensive, and it is not possible for the government to cover all hospital costs if people are only contributing a small amount.

He reportedly asked, “What is Ksh 800?” while expressing his frustration over the low contributions made by some members of the public.

In his statement, the Health CS allegedly said it is shameful for Kenyans to undervalue their own health. He explained that when people become seriously ill, hospital bills can be very high, sometimes running into thousands or even millions of shillings. He warned that such costs cannot be supported by minimal monthly payments.

Duale further urged Kenyans to wake up and take responsibility for their health. He emphasized that SHA was created to help all citizens when they get sick, but it can only work well if people contribute fairly. He noted that the government is doing its part, but citizens must also play their role.

His remarks have sparked mixed reactions across the country. While some Kenyans agree that higher contributions are necessary to sustain the health system, others say the high cost of living makes it difficult to pay more.

The discussion around SHA contributions continues as the government pushes for stronger support of the program.
