Uhuru Says Africa’s Future Lies in Its Young People at Lagos Leadership Forum

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has described Africa’s youth as the continent’s most valuable asset, saying their energy, ideas, and integrity will determine Africa’s future more than any natural resource.

Uhuru made the remarks on Wednesday while delivering a keynote address at the Future Africa Leaders Awards (FALA) 2025 ceremony held at the Loveworld Nation Arena in Lagos, Nigeria.

Speaking to an audience of young leaders and dignitaries, the former Head of State said Africa’s transformation will be driven from within, not by external interventions.

“For years we have been told about the riches beneath Africa’s soil, yet our greatest wealth lies in the minds and hearts of our young people,” Uhuru said. “You are not leaders of tomorrow. You are already shaping the future today.”

He applauded the award recipients for choosing service, innovation, and community impact over personal comfort, saying their work reflects a new generation of African leadership.

Uhuru stressed that true leadership is measured by positive change rather than titles or positions, urging young Africans to embrace transparency, accountability, and purpose in their pursuits.

According to him, Africa does not suffer from a shortage of ideas or youthful energy, but rather a lack of value-driven leadership guided by vision and responsibility to the people.

During the event, Uhuru praised Pastor Chris Oyakhilome for founding the Future Africa Leaders Foundation, noting that the initiative goes beyond celebrating success by nurturing purpose and ethical leadership among young Africans.

He also paid tribute to former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, whom he warmly referred to as “Baba,” crediting him for his continued mentorship and dedication to shaping Africa’s next generation of leaders.

As part of his New Year message, Uhuru wished Africans peace, wisdom, and prosperity, calling for renewed belief in the continent’s ability to chart its own destiny.

“May Africa rise, built by Africans, strengthened by unity, and guided by leaders who serve,” he said.

The Future Africa Leaders Awards, founded by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, is an annual initiative that recognises young Africans making a meaningful impact in areas such as education, youth empowerment, leadership development, and mentorship across the continent.
