Oburu Declares Readiness to Fly ODM Flag in 2027 If Party Chooses Solo Path

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Oburu Oginga has announced that he will be the party’s presidential candidate should ODM decide to contest the 2027 General Election independently.

In a New Year address to the nation, Oburu said the ODM constitution clearly outlines that the party leader automatically becomes its presidential flag bearer if the party opts to run without forming a coalition.

“If ODM goes it alone, the matter of who becomes presidential candidate is already settled by the constitution,” Oburu stated. “That candidate is the party leader, and I am the party leader. Anyone eyeing the presidency through ODM under such circumstances is mistaken.”

He further warned individuals positioning themselves for the presidency within the party to seek alternative platforms if ODM opts for a solo run, insisting the party’s internal laws leave no room for contest.

Addressing claims that ODM has been weakened or compromised through cooperation with other political formations, Oburu strongly dismissed the accusations, maintaining that the party remains solid, independent, and deeply rooted at the grassroots.

According to the ODM boss, the year 2026 will be critical in shaping the party’s political future, as ODM will make a definitive decision on whether to contest the next election on its own or join forces with other parties.

“Anyone claiming ODM has been sold is engaging in wishful thinking,” he said. “This party is alive, strong, and firmly grounded among the people. ODM cannot be sold, and even if it were, I doubt there is anyone in Kenya capable of paying that price.”

Oburu noted that ODM’s strength lies in its nationwide support, describing it as a party that extends to the lowest grassroots levels across the country.

Reflecting on the past year, Oburu described 2025 as a period of both achievement and sorrow, paying tribute to the late ODM leader Raila Odinga, whom he termed a national icon and a close family member.

He said Raila’s death had deeply impacted both the party and the nation but emphasised that ODM had remained united despite the loss.

Clarifying ODM’s current engagement with the Kenya Kwanza administration, Oburu said the party is operating under a broad-based political arrangement rather than a formal coalition.

“We are not part of government in the strict sense. This is not a coalition but a broad-based arrangement,” he explained.

The ODM leader added that the party is keenly observing the implementation of the 10-point agenda agreed upon by Raila Odinga and President William Ruto.

He concluded by urging party members to stay united and focused, noting that decisions made in the coming year would be crucial as the country moves closer to the 2027 General Election.
