ODM Chairperson Gladys Wanga has dismissed claims that the party plans to expel Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna following his absence from a recent Central Committee meeting.
Speaking during a television interview, Wanga emphasized that ODM remains a democratic party where members are free to express differing opinions without fear of punishment. She stated that Sifuna’s views on the broad-based political arrangement do not amount to misconduct and therefore cannot justify disciplinary action.
According to Wanga, party discipline only applies after ODM reaches a collective and binding decision, which must then be respected by all members.
“Everyone in ODM is entitled to their opinion. We are not chasing anyone away. What wrongdoing has Sifuna committed to deserve expulsion?” she questioned.
Absence from Meeting Explained
Wanga also addressed concerns surrounding absenteeism at the Central Committee meeting, saying it was unfair to jump to conclusions without understanding the circumstances behind members’ absence.
She explained that Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi formally sought permission to miss the meeting as he is currently in South Africa on official Senate duties. She added that she has been in constant communication with him and expects his return soon.
On Sifuna’s absence, Wanga revealed that he had sent an apology explaining that he missed his flight, making it impossible for him to attend.
She dismissed any attempts to politicize the issue, noting that missed flights are common and should not be used to fuel internal party tensions.
Wanga concluded by assuring party members and supporters that the meeting proceeded smoothly, as the required quorum was met, and ODM remains united despite differing perspectives within its leadership.
