U.S. Embassy Warns Americans in Kenya Ahead of Planned Nairobi Protests

The United States Embassy in Kenya has issued a security alert urging its citizens to exercise caution following reports of a planned demonstration in Nairobi.

According to the advisory, the protest is expected to take place on Wednesday, January 14, near the U.S. Embassy in the Gigiri area. The demonstration is reportedly linked to international backlash over recent U.S. military action in Venezuela that has sparked protests across different parts of the world.

The embassy noted that social media platforms have been circulating calls for demonstrations in the vicinity of its premises, prompting concerns over safety and possible disruptions.

Prior to the advisory, reports indicated that left-leaning political groups and activist movements in Kenya had mobilized supporters, particularly youth, to stage protests in solidarity with Venezuela.

The protests follow a controversial U.S. military operation carried out earlier this month in Caracas, which led to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. The operation and subsequent transfer of Maduro to the United States have triggered global reactions, with demonstrations already recorded in several countries.

In light of the planned protests, the U.S. Embassy advised its citizens living in Kenya to avoid large gatherings, stay alert, and closely monitor local news updates. Americans were also encouraged to maintain a low profile and keep regular communication with friends and family.

Activists in Kenya are reportedly linking the planned demonstrations to broader regional and global political issues, including concerns over foreign military interventions and democratic processes in parts of Africa.

The embassy has reiterated its commitment to regularly updating its citizens on security-related developments, emphasizing the importance of personal safety during periods of potential unrest.
