President William Ruto has joined Kenyans in mourning the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, describing him as a courageous politician whose life was defined by resilience, generosity, and bold ideas.
In a heartfelt message, the President praised Jirongo as a determined achiever who never allowed hardships to limit his ambitions. He noted that the former legislator was not only a seasoned politician but also a sharp businessman with an enduring entrepreneurial spirit.
According to President Ruto, Jirongo embodied strength and warmth in equal measure, combining blunt honesty with approachability and wisdom.
“Above everything else, he was exceptionally generous—always ready to uplift others and invest his time, resources, and confidence in people,” the President said.
Ruto further described Jirongo as a fearless individual who never shied away from difficult positions or ambitious ideas, adding that his contribution to Kenya’s political space would not be forgotten.
The Head of State extended his condolences to Jirongo’s family and friends, saying his thoughts and prayers were with them during the painful period of loss.
Jirongo died in the early hours of Saturday following a road accident at the Karai area in Naivasha, Nakuru County. Reports indicate that he was driving alone when his vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a bus along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway at around 3:00 a.m.
Police confirmed that investigations into the crash are ongoing, noting that Jirongo’s vehicle was extensively damaged.
Following news of his death, leaders from across the political divide paid tribute to the former MP.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula described Jirongo as a trailblazer who left a lasting imprint on Kenya’s politics, particularly during the energetic political era of the 1990s.
KANU chairman Gideon Moi, speaking on behalf of the Moi family and the party, remembered Jirongo as a loyal family man, a confident leader, and a politician who remained firm in his beliefs. He praised his honesty, courage, and visible influence during KANU’s final years in power.
Saboti MP Caleb Amisi said he cancelled his birthday celebrations in honour of Jirongo, describing him as a principled and generous leader who was unafraid to speak uncomfortable truths.
ODM leader Oburu Odinga also conveyed his condolences, calling Jirongo’s death a major loss and assuring the family of the party’s support during their time of grief.
As tributes continue to pour in, Jirongo is being remembered as a daring political voice whose legacy will endure in Kenya’s public life.
