Social Health Authority (SHA) Chief Executive Officer Mercy Mwangangi has announced the appointment of 82 new Principal Officers in a sweeping management overhaul aimed at strengthening leadership and improving service delivery across the Authority.
In a statement issued on Saturday, December 13, Mwangangi said the appointments are part of a broader strategy to enhance SHA’s managerial capacity as it rolls out key health sector reforms.
She noted that the newly appointed officers were selected through a competitive and transparent recruitment exercise that began on July 29, 2025, underscoring the Authority’s commitment to merit-based hiring.
According to Mwangangi, the officers will play a vital role in supporting SHA’s mandate, particularly as the institution navigates a critical transition period under the new health insurance framework.
“SHA is pleased to confirm the appointment of eighty-two Principal Officers following a rigorous and transparent recruitment process,” she said, adding that the move marks an important milestone in strengthening the Authority’s operations.
The appointments cut across several strategic departments, including legal services, benefits management, supply chain management, planning and partnerships, as well as registration and compliance at both national and county levels.
Other key roles filled include Principal Officers in finance and fund management, human resource management and development, and customer experience, all aimed at improving efficiency and accountability.
The Authority also named new officers in ICT, corporate communications, internal audit, records management, and administration.
Notably, a significant number of the appointments—47 officers—were allocated to claims management roles at the county level, an area considered critical to the smooth functioning of the health insurance system.
Mwangangi expressed appreciation to SHA staff for their dedication and support during the transition, acknowledging the challenges the Authority has faced in recent months.
The latest appointments come amid efforts to address management gaps that had slowed operations and raised concerns about the long-term sustainability of the new health insurance scheme.
With the new leadership team in place, SHA says it is better positioned to stabilise operations and deliver improved healthcare services to Kenyans nationwide.
