Traffic Alert: Major Nairobi Roads to Close Tonight for Standard Chartered Marathon

Motorists in Nairobi are advised to brace for temporary road closures and traffic diversions from Saturday night to Sunday afternoon as the city hosts the 2025 Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon.

In a statement released Saturday evening, the National Police Service (NPS) announced that several major roads will be closed starting midnight, October 25, and will reopen at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 26, to ensure public safety and smooth coordination of the marathon.

“To ensure public safety and the smooth management of the 2025 Standard Chartered Marathon, the National Police Service notifies the public of temporary road closures and traffic diversions in Nairobi,” part of the notice read.

Affected Roads and Alternative Routes

The main road affected is the Southern Bypass, which will be closed from the Ole Sereni Interchange on Mombasa Road up to Kikuyu Town.

Motorists travelling from Mombasa Road to Kikuyu are advised to use Uhuru Highway through Waiyaki Way, then rejoin the Southern Bypass at Gitaru Interchange.

Those heading from Dagoretti South to Kikuyu should use Dagoretti Road, while travellers between Dagoretti South and Lang’ata are advised to use Lang’ata Road via Karen.

The police warned that stern action would be taken against motorists who ignore officers’ instructions or violate traffic rules.

“All motorists are urged to be patient, adhere strictly to traffic rules, and follow the guidance of officers stationed along the affected routes,” the NPS stated.
