Former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo died after sustaining severe blunt force injuries to the chest and abdomen, a post-mortem examination has confirmed.
The autopsy, conducted at Lee Funeral Home, revealed that Jirongo also suffered serious spinal and limb injuries following the crash. The exercise was carried out in the presence of family pathologist Dr Joseph Ndung’u and Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor, alongside police officers.
Dr Ndung’u said the deceased’s body showed extensive trauma, including multiple fractures. He noted that Jirongo had two broken bones on his right hand, fractures on both legs, and significant internal injuries.
“There was a severe crush injury to the chest with multiple broken ribs, perforation of the heart, and rupture of major blood vessels connected to it. This caused massive bleeding into the chest cavity,” Dr Ndung’u explained.
He added that the abdomen had also suffered crush injuries, including damage to the liver that resulted in internal bleeding, as well as a complete severing of the spinal cord.
“Based on our findings, the cause of death was crush injuries to the chest and abdomen combined with spinal injuries due to blunt force trauma,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident. Jirongo died from injuries sustained in a road crash that occurred in the early hours of December 13, 2025, at Karai area along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.
Preliminary findings indicate that the crash involved Jirongo’s vehicle and a public service bus operated by Climax Company Limited. The collision occurred at around 2:19am and resulted in a head-on impact, pushing Jirongo’s car approximately 25 metres from the point of collision, while the bus came to rest about 50 metres away.
DCI officers, including homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory, visited the scene, conducted initial assessments, and secured key exhibits.
Investigators also retrieved CCTV footage from a nearby petrol station, which is currently under forensic review. The footage reportedly captures Jirongo’s vehicle entering the station shortly before the crash and later rejoining the highway.
The bus driver has been questioned and released on cash bail pending further investigations. He is expected to report back to investigators on December 22, 2025.
Police say inquiries are ongoing, with more witness statements and scene analysis expected before the investigation file is submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions for further direction.
