Security agencies in Garissa County have confiscated more than 1,200 litres of suspected smuggled petrol and arrested one suspect as part of an ongoing operation against contraband fuel trade in the region.

County Commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo said the fuel, valued at approximately Sh200,000, was being transported in a Toyota Probox that was intercepted by police following intelligence provided by members of the public.

The operation led to the recovery of about 60 jerricans, each holding 20 litres of petrol, which authorities believe had been illegally brought in from neighbouring Somalia and was destined for sale within Garissa town.

Mwabudzo noted that the arrest comes just days after security teams shut down two illegal fuel outlets operating within the town, signalling an intensified crackdown on smuggling networks.

“We will not relent in this operation. Anyone attempting to ferry or trade in illegal fuel within this county will be arrested, and their goods seized,” the County Commissioner warned.

He reaffirmed that the county security team remains committed to eliminating all forms of illegal trade, particularly contraband products entering Kenya through the porous border.

Residents were urged to continue working closely with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities, with Mwabudzo noting that public cooperation is key to protecting consumers, safeguarding legitimate businesses and maintaining security in the region.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.
