Shock as Nairobi Student Suffers Severe Burns After Girlfriend Allegedly Pours Hot Water on Him for Failing to Send Her Ksh 10,000

A university student in Nairobi has suffered serious burns after his girlfriend allegedly poured hot water on him while he slept, reportedly after he failed to send her Ksh 10,000. The incident has sparked public outcry and calls for urgent police action.

Godia Stephen, a 27-year-old fourth-year student at Multimedia University of Kenya, recounted how his Valentine’s Day turned into a nightmare.

He said he and his girlfriend had argued earlier over his past relationship, but the disagreement appeared to have calmed down by nightfall.

He went to sleep believing the issue was resolved, only to wake up in excruciating pain as hot water was poured on him.

Medical reports indicate that Stephen suffered burns on about 21 per cent of his body, affecting his arms, back, and legs. He was rushed to hospital, where he is currently receiving specialised treatment.

Friends and family described his injuries as serious and warned that recovery could take time.
The case has drawn widespread attention online and in public discourse.

Godfrey Mosiria, Nairobi County Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, expressed concern over the lack of an arrest.

He said he was worried that Gladwell Kagai, the woman alleged to have attacked Stephen, was still not in police custody. He urged the National Police Service, led by the Inspector General, to act swiftly and ensure justice is served.

Mosiria emphasised that the law must be applied fairly and consistently, adding that the urgency shown in previous cases should also be applied in this matter.

Nairobi police confirmed that an assault case has been opened and that officers are currently collecting statements to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. No arrest has been made so far.

The incident has reignited discussions in Kenya about relationship violence, with authorities urging couples to seek professional help and resolve disputes peacefully before they escalate into harm.
