Road accidents continue to increase across different parts of Kenya, raising concern among citizens and authorities.
In a recent tragic incident, a family’s trip to attend a wedding ended in disaster after a serious crash in Makueni County left one person dead and 18 others injured.
The accident happened at Kikiini area along the Kikima–Machakos road when a matatu lost control after one of its front wheels detached while in motion.
According to reports, the driver was unable to manage the vehicle, which veered off the road and crashed.
Mbooni West Police Commander Benson Makumbi confirmed the incident, stating that the matatu had been hired from Nairobi to transport passengers to a wedding ceremony in Kyuu.
At the time of the accident, the group was traveling back to Nairobi after attending the celebration.
Initial investigations revealed that the vehicle was carrying more passengers than its licensed capacity of 14. Among those on board was a well-known lawyer identified as William Makire.
Police suspect that overloading may have worsened the situation, though full investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and rushed the injured victims to Mbooni Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
The body of the deceased was also taken to the same hospital’s mortuary as authorities await further procedures.
Officials have urged drivers and passengers to follow traffic rules and ensure vehicles are in proper condition to avoid such painful incidents. Investigations into the accident are still underway.
