Nairobi Woman Charged Over Alleged KSh60 Million Fake Laptop Tender Scam

A woman has been charged in a Nairobi court over allegations of defrauding a businessman in a fake government tender scheme involving the supply of laptops, resulting in a loss of KSh60 million.

The accused, Joy Wangari Kamau, appeared before a Nairobi court where she faced multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit a felony, obtaining money by false pretences, and forgery.

According to court documents, Kamau is accused of conspiring to defraud businessman Vijay Virma between September and December 2023 by falsely claiming she could secure him a lucrative laptop supply tender from the Ministry of Information, Communication and Digital Economy.

Prosecutors told the court that the suspect allegedly used forged documents and misrepresentation to convince the complainant that the tender was genuine, leading him to transfer large sums of money in the expectation of securing the deal.

The court heard that the alleged scheme resulted in the loss of approximately KSh60 million before the complainant realized it was fraudulent.

Kamau denied the charges as the case proceeded, with the prosecution expected to present evidence detailing how the alleged fraud was carried out and the role of each party involved.

The case highlights growing concerns over tender-related fraud in Kenya, where criminals reportedly exploit government procurement processes to deceive investors and businesspeople with promises of lucrative contracts.
