Mudavadi Reveals Kenyans in Russia Earn Up to Ksh3M Signing Bonus, Ksh350K Monthly Salary

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has disclosed that Kenyans recruited into Russia’s military operations are being paid significant sums, including signing bonuses of up to Ksh3 million and monthly salaries of up to Ksh350,000.

Appearing before the National Assembly on April 1, 2026, Mudavadi said the Kenyan Embassy in Moscow estimates that about 252 Kenyans may have been recruited into Russia’s Special Military Operations, although the actual number could be higher.

He told lawmakers that 47 Kenyans have so far been rescued and safely repatriated with the assistance of the Kenyan Embassy in Moscow.

Mudavadi further revealed that two Kenyans are confirmed prisoners of war held in Ukraine, and diplomatic efforts are ongoing to secure their safety and eventual return.

He added that the government is maintaining contact with both Russian and Ukrainian authorities to ensure consular access and support for affected citizens.

According to the PSC, recruitment networks have targeted Kenyans through unregistered agencies operating locally and abroad, often using indirect travel routes to move recruits into conflict zones.

Mudavadi noted that many of those recruited were attracted by financial incentives, with contracts reportedly offering large signing bonuses, monthly salaries, and promises of citizenship and gratuity payments.

He also said Kenya has already engaged Russian authorities, resulting in measures to stop further enlistment of Kenyans into the conflict.

The government has pledged to continue diplomatic efforts aimed at dismantling recruitment networks and repatriating all Kenyans who wish to return home.
