Kenyan Politics Meets Sports as Oburu Oginga Donates KSh 1 Million to “Vurugu” Boxing Match

Kenyan politics has once again blended with the world of sports entertainment after Dr. Oburu Oginga donated KSh 1 million to back the highly anticipated “Vurugu” boxing match between internet sensations Majembe and Mbavu Destroyer.

The generous contribution was made just hours ahead of the much-talked-about clash, scheduled to take place today, Saturday, April 4, 2026, at the Kasarani Indoor Arena.

The showdown, organized and promoted by popular media personality Oga Obinna via Obinna TV Studios, has generated massive buzz nationwide due to its dramatic build-up, viral memes, and star-studded involvement.

Senator Oburu Oginga’s donation comes after a fun yet clever exchange with Oga Obinna. In a widely circulated video, the senator was seen playfully throwing boxing jabs while chanting Mbavu Destroyer’s popular catchphrase “Weka Mawe,” a slang term that has come to represent the fight’s fierce, no-holds-barred spirit.

Obinna, never one to miss an opportunity, publicly challenged prominent personalities using the trending slogan to support the event financially. Oburu Oginga has now responded in grand fashion with his KSh 1 million pledge.

This latest donation adds to the impressive list of high-profile backing the bout has received, cutting across Kenya’s political spectrum.

President William Ruto earlier made waves by promising KSh 1 million to each of the two fighters, along with money to sponsor 2,000 spectator tickets.

Sources say the pledge has already been honored, with further assistance reportedly being coordinated through figures such as Jalang’o.
