During an interview held on Wednesday morning, Jennifer Okalo, a resident of Kakamega County, emotionally narrated the distressing experience she went through while working in Saudi Arabia. WATCH THE VIDEO HERE.
Jennifer said she had decided to seek employment abroad after being assured of a house help job that would help her earn an income and support her family back in Kenya.
She explained that before travelling, she expected to work under normal conditions as a domestic worker, but her hopes were dashed shortly after her arrival in Saudi Arabia.
Upon reaching her destination, she discovered that the job she had been promised had already been given to someone else.
Jennifer further stated that she was later assigned completely different duties from what she had initially agreed to.
According to her account, the following morning, her female employer brought several dogs into her room and allegedly ordered her to engage in disturbing and degrading acts involving the animals.
She said she refused and pleaded to be sent back to Kenya, but her requests were reportedly ignored.
Jennifer also claimed that she was threatened and eventually forced into compliance, saying she felt trapped in a foreign country without her passport, money, or anyone to help her.
She added that she endured the abuse until the end of her contract, after which she managed to escape and return home.
Now back in Kenya, Jennifer is urging other Kenyan women to be cautious when seeking jobs abroad, warning that not all job offers are genuine.
She has also called on the government to strengthen protections for migrant workers going overseas.
