Cracks Emerge in ODM as Power Struggles Intensify After Raila Odinga Exit

The unity that once held together the Linda Ground faction is now quickly fading, as internal divisions and political rivalry begin to tear the group apart. What initially appeared to be a strong alliance following the transition period has now turned into a battleground for control and influence.

After the exit of Raila Odinga from active leadership, tensions began to rise within the party. Key decisions made during the transition period, including the appointment of Oburu Oginga as an interim leader, have sparked controversy.

Some insiders claim that the move was carefully planned to block Anyang’ Nyong’o, who was reportedly Raila’s preferred successor.

Oburu himself admitted that he was unaware of the appointment until he was informed at the airport by Junet Mohamed. Despite the surprise, he accepted the role, a move that critics now say positioned him as a temporary figure in a larger political game.

Power Battles in Kisumu

The rivalry has been most visible in Kisumu County, where internal elections exposed deep divisions within the party. Gladys Wanga and her allies supported their own candidates, clashing with those backed by Oburu.

The situation became so tense that planned elections had to be cancelled due to fears of further division.

Despite attempts to reach a consensus, mistrust remains high. Reports suggest that key party events have been dominated by selected loyalists, raising questions about fairness and representation.

Family Influence and Political Survival

Amid the chaos, the Odinga family has moved to consolidate its influence. A symbolic gathering was held to endorse Oburu as the custodian of the family’s political legacy.

According to him, the endorsement represents continuity and preservation of the family’s role in Kenya’s political landscape.

However, divisions within the family itself are also emerging. Winnie Odinga and Ruth Odinga are said to be pursuing different political paths, further complicating the situation.

Winnie Odinga’s Blocked Rise

Efforts to elevate Winnie Odinga into a senior party role have reportedly been blocked by rival factions. Although some leaders, including Abdulswamad Nassir, supported her potential appointment as deputy party leader, others opposed the move.

Observers believe Winnie’s growing influence has made her a target, with fears that she could challenge existing power structures within the party.

Internal Resistance Against Oburu

Further tension arose when Oburu appointed a close ally as his Chief of Staff, bypassing more experienced candidates. This decision angered several leaders, including Lilian Gogo, who publicly criticized the appointment and even called for the official’s removal.

The growing resistance highlights the fragile nature of Oburu’s leadership and the ongoing struggle for control within the party.

Uncertain Future

With factions emerging, loyalties shifting, and internal conflicts escalating, the future of the Linda Ground movement remains uncertain.

The once-united front is now facing serious tests, and the coming months will determine whether the faction can survive or collapse under the weight of its internal battles.

Political analysts warn that unless unity is restored, the divisions could significantly weaken the party’s influence ahead of future elections.
