Uhuru, Gachagua Camps Hold Talks on Possible Mt Kenya Alliance Ahead of 2027

A high-level meeting involving allies of former President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sparked fresh political debate after reports emerged of a possible alliance ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The consultative meeting, reportedly held at a private residence in Nairobi on Friday, March 20, brought together senior figures from the Jubilee Party and the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP). The discussions are said to have focused on forming a united political front in the Mt Kenya region.

Push for Unity in Mt Kenya

After years of political rivalry, the two camps now appear to be exploring common ground, largely driven by shared concerns over economic policies and claims of marginalisation within the current political setup.

Strategists from both sides reportedly believe that a divided Mt Kenya voting bloc weakens its bargaining power nationally. By working together, they aim to consolidate influence and regain a stronger voice in shaping national politics.

The potential alliance would combine Gachagua’s grassroots mobilisation, particularly under his “Wantam” movement, with Jubilee’s established political structures and networks built during Kenyatta’s presidency.

Political Implications for 2027

If successful, the emerging partnership could pose a significant challenge to President William Ruto and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), especially in the vote-rich Mt Kenya region that played a key role in previous elections.

Reports indicate that discussions have moved beyond initial talks, with leaders now exploring a joint strategy that could include presenting a single regional candidate or acting as a decisive political bloc in the next election cycle.

Uncertainty Still Remains

Despite the momentum, analysts note that the success of such an alliance will depend on whether both leaders can overcome past political differences and convince their supporters to embrace unity. Issues such as power-sharing and leadership structure are also expected to shape the final outcome.

As political realignments gather pace, the reported Uhuru–Gachagua talks could mark a significant shift in Kenya’s political landscape ahead of 2027.
