Ruto Sparks Buzz After Referring to Jalang’o as ‘Nairobi Senator’ at Public Event

President William Ruto on Tuesday stirred political excitement after publicly referring to Lang’ata MP Jalang’o as the “Nairobi Senator” during an event at PC Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute in Dagoretti South.

The Head of State was addressing students and local residents about ongoing government development programmes when he paused to recognise leaders who were present.

In a moment that caught many by surprise, President Ruto mentioned Jalang’o as the Nairobi Senator, prompting loud cheers and chants from sections of the crowd.

The unexpected remark quickly sparked debate both at the venue and on social media, with observers questioning its political significance.

The comments come at a time when the current Nairobi Senator, Edwin Sifuna, has maintained a critical stance against the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Sifuna, a senior member of the opposition, has repeatedly challenged government policies inside and outside Parliament, making Nairobi politics increasingly tense ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Jalang’o, who was elected on an ODM ticket but has recently appeared to work closely with President Ruto, has already declared his intention to vie for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat.

His political moves have added a new twist to the city’s landscape, setting the stage for potential realignments and rivalry in the capital.

Political analysts note that the President’s public recognition could significantly raise Jalang’o’s profile among Nairobi voters.

However, it also raises broader questions about shifting alliances and the evolving relationship between the ruling coalition and opposition leaders as the 2027 race gradually takes shape.
