President William Ruto Celebrates International Women’s Day 2026

President William Ruto led Kenyans in marking International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026, paying tribute to the “strength, wisdom, and grace” of women across the country and the world.

In a message shared widely on social media, the President posted a graphic featuring himself with a young girl, a chess queen, and the State House logo, captioned:

“Happy International Women's Day to every Queen, young and old.”

This aligns with the 2026 national theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls”.

Nationwide Celebrations

Across Kenya, government officials reinforced the President’s message through events and initiatives focused on women’s empowerment:

In Nakuru County, Cabinet Secretary Hanna Wendot Cheptumo highlighted efforts to strengthen economic empowerment via programs such as the Women Enterprise Fund.

Measures to combat gender-based violence (GBV) were also emphasized during the celebrations.

Progress and Ongoing Challenges

Kenya has made notable strides in women’s representation and rights:

The number of female governors increased from 6.3% in 2017 to 14.9% in 2022.

The prevalence of FGM (female genital mutilation) has decreased.

However, a recent UN report reminds that no country has achieved full gender equality, underlining the need for continued action.

Call to Action

While the day celebrated achievements in sports, business, and politics, advocates stressed that annual recognition must translate into tangible policies and lived realities for all women and girls.

The overarching message of IWD 2026 in Kenya is clear: progress must be matched with decisive action, rights protection, and equality for every woman and girl.
