Anyang’ Nyong’o, the Governor of Kisumu, has called on members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to reconnect with the party’s original principles as internal debates continue ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Returning to ODM’s Roots
Nyong’o reminded supporters that the orange symbol, which has represented opposition and reform since the 2005 constitutional referendum, must continue to embody conscience and democratic ideals.
“Twenty years ago, an orange became a symbol of defiance. Today, it must remain the symbol of conscience,” he said.
He emphasized that transparency, constitutional governance, and democratic participation should remain central pillars of ODM, urging leaders and members to recommit to these core values.
“Let us return to first principles: transparency without fear, constitutionalism without compromise, and democratisation as a permanent struggle,” Nyong’o stated.
Message to Emerging Factions
Political experts note that Nyong’o’s remarks are likely directed at emerging factions within ODM, including groups associated with Oburu Odinga.
Discussions around party strategy and alliances have intensified in recent months, prompting concerns about the party’s identity and ideological foundation.
Historical Context
ODM originated from the 2005 constitutional referendum movement, where the orange symbol became associated with opposition to the proposed constitution.
Over time, the movement evolved into one of Kenya’s leading opposition parties, playing a central role in shaping the country’s political landscape.
Analysts suggest Nyong’o’s call reflects wider anxieties among veteran party members about preserving ODM’s founding principles amid changing political dynamics and potential coalition formations.
As the 2027 elections approach, ODM faces the challenge of balancing internal unity with strategic political alliances while staying true to the values that earned it national support.
Nyong’o, a respected academic and seasoned politician, has consistently championed strong institutions, constitutional fidelity, and democratic governance throughout his career.
