President Ruto Meets Chinese Officials Ahead of SGR Extension Launch to Boost Regional Trade

On Wednesday evening, William Ruto met with Song Hailiang at State House Nairobi, signaling Kenya’s commitment to modernizing its transport infrastructure.

The meeting took place ahead of the official launches of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) extension from Narok to Kisumu and onward to Malaba, scheduled for Thursday and Saturday.

The new SGR extension aims to strengthen Kenya’s position as a key regional trade and logistics hub.

By linking Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the Port of Mombasa, the railway is expected to significantly enhance trade connectivity across East and Central Africa.

President Ruto emphasized that the project will unlock economic potential in Western Kenya, promoting industrial growth, agricultural expansion, and tourism development along the corridor.

In addition to boosting trade, the railway will ease road congestion by transferring bulk cargo from highways to rail, lowering transportation costs, saving time, and improving road safety.

The project is also expected to create business and investment opportunities for communities along the route.

Other attendees included Chen Zhong and Du Fei. Discussions focused on operational readiness and strategies to ensure the timely completion of the SGR extension.

Stakeholders remain optimistic that the launch of the SGR extension will enhance regional integration and economic growth, marking a major milestone in Kenya’s vision of becoming a transport and logistics hub in East Africa.
