ODM Parliamentary Group Endorses Sifuna’s Suspension Amid Surprising Attendance

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party’s Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting in Nairobi has officially endorsed the suspension of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna from his role as Secretary General.

Surprising Attendance

Despite being key allies of Sifuna’s “Linda Mwananchi” faction, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi attended the meeting chaired by Sen. Dr. Oburu Odinga.

Their presence has raised eyebrows, suggesting either a move toward reconciliation or alignment with the new leadership direction.

Key Decisions Ratified

Leadership Transition: The PG fully endorsed the emergency NEC decision to install Hon. Dr. Oburu Odinga as the Party Leader.

Sifuna’s Suspension: The PG backed the National Executive Committee’s move to suspend Edwin Sifuna as Secretary General.

UDA Partnership: The PG endorsed the Central Committee’s decision to continue the working arrangement with UDA under the “Broad-based Government” framework.

Implications

The meeting signals ODM’s attempt to maintain stability and inclusivity despite internal friction.

Including Sifuna’s allies shows a strategy to prevent splintering while implementing leadership changes.

Analysts note this could mark a strategic shift in the party’s identity, particularly as it navigates its role within a broad-based government.

As the dust settles, questions remain about whether ODM can preserve its identity while embracing the new structure, or if this marks the beginning of a broader party rebranding.
