ODM Leader Dr Oburu Oginga Affirms Party’s Political Alliance Beyond 2027 Polls

ODM party leader Dr Oburu Oginga addressed a large crowd of supporters during a Linda Ground rally in Migori County on Sunday, putting to rest speculation surrounding the future of the party’s political cooperation ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Dr Oginga reassured members that the agreement with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) remains in force and will continue beyond the next general elections, emphasizing that the partnership is not tied to a specific expiry date and should not be viewed as temporary.

His remarks come just days after Siaya Governor James Orengo suggested that the ODM–UDA agreement would lapse on March 7, 2026, coinciding with the first anniversary of its signing in 2025 by President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Dr Oginga dismissed these claims, stating that the arrangement is intended as a long-term collaboration and that party members should focus on sustaining unity rather than speculating on deadlines.

The differing statements underscore internal divisions within ODM, with two notable factions emerging. One group, aligned with Dr Oginga, backs the broad-based government and supports President Ruto’s re-election bid.

The opposing faction, associated with Governor Orengo, has expressed resistance to the current political strategy, criticizing what it describes as “Tutam” rhetoric and raising concerns about the direction of the alliance.

This debate reflects the early shaping of political alignments as Kenya prepares for the 2027 elections.
