Ezekiel Mutua, the Chief Executive Officer of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK), has stepped in to address misinformation surrounding veteran gospel singer Mama Mary Atieno.
Mutua issued an official statement on Monday, March 2, 2026, emphasizing that a viral image of the singer circulating online has been taken out of context and misrepresented.
He clarified that the photo in question was captured during a church prayer session and does not reflect her current living situation.
Mutua stressed that overnight prayer meetings often involve participants appearing without makeup or formal clothing, a fact that has contributed to misleading narratives about the gospel singer.
He warned that such distortions not only misinform the public but also undermine the dignity of Mama Mary Atieno.
Mutua further highlighted that Mama Mary continues to inspire, particularly women and persons with disabilities, proving that having a disability does not mean being unable to achieve one’s goals.
He also acknowledged the efforts of Larry Liza, through the Larry Liza Foundation, which facilitated the construction of a house for the singer in Buruburu. While the house is complete, Mutua noted that more support is needed to properly furnish it.
The MCSK CEO called on the public, government bodies, and fans both locally and internationally to continue supporting Mama Mary Atieno.
He also urged everyone to fact-check information before sharing it online, reinforcing the importance of responsible social media use.
