Oburu Oginga Calls for Joint Management of Lake Victoria to Protect Fishermen

ODM Party leader Oburu Oginga has urged Presidents William Ruto and Yoweri Museveni to establish a joint management framework for Lake Victoria to end harassment of fishermen on both sides of the border.

Speaking publicly, Oburu emphasized the need for coordinated security operations, highlighting that fishermen continue to face intimidation, arrests, and confiscation of gear due to uncoordinated enforcement by Kenyan and Ugandan authorities.

“Lake Victoria should not be treated as contested territory but as a shared economic resource supporting thousands of families across Kenya and Uganda,” he said.

He called on President Museveni to support a cooperative security framework and urged President Ruto to initiate formal talks with Uganda to establish clear operational guidelines for security agencies operating on the lake.

Oburu stressed that structured joint management would reduce cross-border conflicts, improve surveillance against illegal fishing, and protect livelihoods without victimizing small-scale fishermen.

Lake Victoria remains a critical economic lifeline for communities in western Kenya, contributing significantly to the fishing industry and regional trade.

Oburu’s remarks reflect growing political pressure on both governments to resolve long-standing disputes and ensure stability on the shared waters.
