Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has hinted that he may step down from his position as Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), following rising tensions within the party after the death of Raila Odinga.
Speaking during the “People’s” National Delegates Convention held at Ufungamano House in Nairobi, Sifuna strongly criticized the new leadership under Oburu Oginga.
He declared that he would not continue serving in what he described as a system of “mediocrity.”
Sifuna expressed pride in having served under Raila Odinga, calling him one of the greatest leaders Kenya has ever had.
However, he made it clear that he is not willing to continue in the same role under the current leadership, openly telling Oburu to find another Secretary General.
Despite his tough stance, Sifuna reassured his supporters that his political future does not depend on holding office.
He emphasized that leadership positions are given by the people and expressed confidence that Kenyans would still support him in future elections.
He also clarified that he is not permanently tied to the Secretary General position, noting that there are many capable young leaders within ODM who can take up the role.
However, he insisted that any attempt to replace him must follow the party’s constitution and proper procedures, including a formal delegates’ conference.
Sifuna further revealed that the Linda Mwananchi faction plans to present its own lineup of leaders, setting the stage for a possible political showdown within the party.
His remarks came shortly after a separate ODM meeting formally endorsed Oburu Oginga as the new party leader, highlighting the deepening divisions within the party.
The unfolding situation signals a major turning point for ODM as internal disagreements continue to shape its future direction.
