Nairobi Residents Brace for Water Shortages After Floods Damage Infrastructure

Residents of Nairobi are preparing for water supply disruptions after flooding damaged key parts of the city’s water infrastructure.

The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) announced that 15 estates will experience intermittent water supply as repair teams work to restore normal operations following the recent heavy rains.

Flooding Damages Water Facilities

According to NCWSC, flooding affected pumping stations, pipelines, and treatment facilities, reducing the flow of water to several residential areas. Engineers and technical teams have already been deployed to assess the damage and begin emergency repairs.

However, the utility warned that residents should expect temporary disruptions over the coming days as repair work continues.

Residents Urged to Conserve Water

Authorities have advised residents in the affected estates to:
Store enough water for domestic use
Reduce non-essential water consumption
Follow guidance from local authorities on managing shortages

Businesses, schools, and hospitals in the affected areas have also been urged to make contingency arrangements to ensure services continue during the disruption.

Water Safety Measures in Place

NCWSC emphasized that water safety remains a top priority. Inspection teams are checking whether floodwaters may have contaminated water sources or infrastructure.

Public health authorities are encouraging residents to boil or treat water before use where necessary and maintain proper hygiene to prevent illnesses.

The warnings come amid concerns about waterborne diseases such as Cholera and Typhoid fever, which can spread during flooding.

Flooding Highlights Infrastructure Challenges

The disruptions highlight broader challenges faced by Nairobi in managing urban flooding, which experts say has been worsened by climate change, rapid urban growth, and inadequate drainage systems.

Authorities have reiterated the need for long-term infrastructure improvements and better urban planning to reduce the impact of heavy rains on essential services like water supply.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated through official channels, including NCWSC’s website and social media platforms, for real-time updates on affected areas and restoration timelines.
