Mourners were overwhelmed with emotion during the burial of 25-year-old photojournalist Nick Kosgei, one of six victims who died in the tragic helicopter crash in Mosop.
Kosgei was laid to rest in Silibwet, where family members, friends, and colleagues gathered to pay their final respects to a young man many described as hardworking and full of promise.
The helicopter crashed in the Chepkieb area of Mosop on February 28, killing all six people on board, including Kosgei and his employer. The tragedy shocked residents across the North Rift and the media fraternity.
A Rising Talent in Journalism
Kosgei, a graduate of Maseno University, had built a reputation as a passionate visual storyteller. Friends and colleagues said he was steadily rising in the media industry and had begun establishing himself as a talented photojournalist.
Many described him as determined and focused on building a better future for himself and his family.
Friend Breaks Down During Tribute
During the emotional ceremony, Kosgei’s close female friend Nerea broke down while delivering a heartfelt tribute that moved many mourners to tears.
She described Kosgei as more than just a friend, saying he had been her confidant and someone she deeply valued.
“For anyone who knew Nick and also knew me, they understood how much I valued him,” she said through tears.
“He was not only my friend but also my confidant. He was the only person I can truly say I ever loved.”
Nerea said his sudden death was devastating, especially at a time when his career was beginning to flourish and opportunities were opening up for him.
A Devoted Son With Big Dreams
According to her, Kosgei often spoke about his family and the responsibility he felt to improve their lives.
“Nick loved his family so much. He always spoke about his parents and how he wanted to support them,” she recalled.
She added that within their circle of friends, Kosgei was someone many admired and believed was destined for greatness.
“Thank you to his parents for blessing us with someone we all looked up to,” she said.
Kosgei’s untimely death has left a deep void among friends, family, and colleagues who remember him as a determined young man chasing a brighter future.
