Ministry of Education Adjusts School Calendar Amid Heavy Rainfall and Flooding

The Ministry of Education has announced adjustments to the school calendar following the half-term break due to ongoing heavy rains affecting many parts of Kenya.

The changes aim to safeguard learners, teachers, and school staff as floods, damaged roads, and disrupted transport networks continue to challenge normal school operations.

Persistent rainfall across several counties has caused rivers to overflow, communities to become waterlogged, and access roads to be cut off. In some areas, schools have been surrounded by floodwaters, making travel unsafe for students.

Education authorities have therefore revised reopening dates to allow time for communities to recover and schools to restore essential services.

According to the Ministry, the revised dates prioritize the safety and well-being of learners while ensuring that schools and communities can assess damages.

School heads and regional education officers have been directed to communicate the new timelines to parents and guardians.

Weather experts from the Kenya Meteorological Department have warned that rains are expected to continue in some regions, increasing the risk of further flooding and landslides. Low-lying and flood-prone areas are especially vulnerable.

Parents and teachers have largely welcomed the move, emphasizing that safety must come before academic schedules. Many families have been displaced or affected by damaged property, and the adjustment provides time to stabilize their situations before children return to school.

However, concerns remain about potential learning disruptions and the need to complete the syllabus within a shorter timeframe.

Education stakeholders are calling for flexible learning approaches, including catch-up programmes, to ensure students do not fall behind academically.

This situation highlights the growing importance of adaptive planning in the education sector. Schools must be able to respond quickly to emergencies while protecting learners and maintaining the quality of education.

Parents are advised to stay in close contact with school administrations for updates on reopening dates and safety guidelines.
